Stuck in Your Branding? 5 Steps to Get Unstuck and Build Momentum

Jocelyn Phillips

Ever feel like you're spinning your wheels in your business, tweaking your messaging, updating your website, and trying so hard—but your marketing still isn’t getting results? It’s like sliding around on ice with no traction, right?

This is exactly how so many solo entrepreneurs feel when they’re trying to build their personal brand. They start strong, full of energy and ideas, but at some point, they lose momentum.

Maybe they don’t see results as fast as they expected.

Maybe they get derailed by self-doubt or comparison.

And then they just… stop.

If this sounds like you, you’re not alone. And you’re not stuck. You just need a new approach.

Here’s how to get your brand moving forward again.

#1 - Normalize Setbacks

Branding isn’t a straight, linear path. There will be moments when you second-guess yourself, post content that flops, or feel completely uninspired. That doesn’t mean you’ve failed—it means you’re human.

Many entrepreneurs think that if their marketing isn’t working as fast as they hoped, it means their brand is wrong. Nope. Setbacks are normal. Instead of seeing them as failures, view them as part of the process.

The sooner you accept that ups and downs are part of the journey, the faster you’ll get back on track.

#2 - Take Your Eyes Off the End Result & Focus on the Process

A common mistake I see? Obsessing over the outcome instead of the action.

  • “I want 10,000 followers.”

  • “I need my website to be perfect before I launch.”

  • “I should have a fully booked calendar by now.”

When you focus only on results, you create overwhelm. And overwhelm leads to inaction.

Instead, ask yourself: What is one thing I can do today to refine my brand or improve my marketing?

  • Clarify your messaging so your audience instantly understands what you do.

  • Show up on Stories to talk about your latest project.

  • Write one Instagram post that connects with your audience.

Small, consistent actions create real momentum.

#3 - Do More “Result-Generating Activity”

Scrolling Instagram for inspiration isn’t branding. Reading marketing blogs isn’t branding. Watching what other people are doing isn’t branding.

Taking action is branding.

If you’ve been stuck in research mode, it’s time to shift. Instead of learning about branding, start building your brand strategy. That could mean booking a brand strategy session, refining your messaging, or getting brand photos that actually feel like you.

#4 - Have a Plan B

It’s easy to be motivated when everything is going well. But what happens when life gets busy?

The key to consistency is having a Plan B. Your Plan A might be:

  • Posting 4x a week

  • Engaging with your audience daily

  • Writing a newsletter every month

But when life happens (because it will), your Plan B might be:

  • Posting once a week

  • Showing up on Stories for 30 seconds

  • Repurposing content instead of creating from scratch

Having a Plan B ensures that you are being intentional and staying on track, even when you don’t feel motivated. It takes the decision-making out of it, and you can hold yourself in integrity by sticking to your non-negotiables… even when life is hard.

#5 - Get the Right Help

You don’t need to DIY your brand forever. At some point, the best thing you can do is get expert support.

That’s why I created The Brand Edit—so you don’t have to figure it all out alone. I help solo entrepreneurs build brands that look polished and actually work to attract the right clients through effective marketing.

If you're feeling stuck, let’s change that. Book a call, and let’s get your brand strategy in place so your marketing finally gains traction.
